Unique Child Halloween Costume
Creating A Unique Child Halloween Costume
Halloween is a holiday that is really all about the kids
and the joy in it for the parents is in seeing their
little ones all dressed up in a unique child Halloween
costume. Parental involvement in the child’s costume
choice shows a level of caring that surpasses what many
parents are willing to do. There are plenty of Batmen
and Darth Vaders wandering the streets in search of
candy each Halloween, and that usually is representative
of what the kids are into at the time.
Once a child is
older than four or five years old, he or she is going to
have some very definite ideas about what sort of costume
he or she would like to wear for Halloween. Those ideas
are probably not going to be anything especially unique,
however, as most kids are interested in the same sort of
things. The best intentioned efforts of the parent to
intervene will be seen by the child as an effort to
control what the child will wear and will not be well
received.
Even a run of the mill costume can be made
into something unique, however, by the gentle guidance
of the parent. Even if forty kids in the neighborhood
are dressing as Batman, yours can be the only Batman on
the block with a home made utility belt with real
storage compartments, for example.
To really come up with a unique child Halloween costume,
you must be willing to make the costume yourself. This
can be accomplished with a sewing machine or, if you
don’t have those skills, by mixing and matching various
costume accessories and home made make-up jobs. They say
that there is nothing new under the sun and you’ll find
that they are probably correct (whoever “they” are), but
uniqueness can be found in a new take on an old idea
just as easily as it can in something that is totally
new.
One of the best things about Halloween is that it
inspires creativity in those taking part in costume
design and this is something that the child should
definitely be involved in as well. Let the child decide
what he or she wants to “be” and then work with the
child to make that idea his or her own. If your son
wants to be a zombie, work with him to make him into the
most hideous and horrifying zombie imaginable – the kind
of zombie that would give George A. Romero and Stephen
King nightmares.
Likewise, if your daughter wants to be
a princess, work together on ideas to make her the most
beautiful and regal princess she can possibly be. You
are limited only by your own and your child’s
imagination when it comes to designing a costume.
Working together this way is the best way to have fun
with this holiday and spend important quality time with
your child. By brainstorming ideas and relying on each
other’s talents, you and your child can work together to
come up with a truly unique child Halloween costume.
