Unique Kid Halloween Costume
Choosing a Unique Kid Halloween Costume
Halloween and kids go together like peanut butter and
jelly and one of the things that kids like the most
about the holiday (aside from the sacks of free candy)
is choosing or creating a unique kid Halloween costume.
This is a process that a parent can help take part in
because, unfortunately, a kid’s idea of what is unique
and what actually is unique are often two different
things.
A kid may think that a homemade Batman costume is a
totally unique idea, but the truth is that there will
probably be fifty other Batmen prowling the streets in
your neighborhood alone come Halloween night. A little
input and guidance from a parent can help keep a kid
focused on something that really is unique and not just
a carbon copy of the same costume that every other kid
will be wearing.
Creativity is the key to any unique kid Halloween
costume and once the creative juices are flowing, you’ll
be amazed at what your kid is probably able to come up
with. After all, who has a better imagination than a
kid? No one – not even Steven Spielberg – but the
imagination of a kid is often erratic and unfocused.
With a little encouragement and guidance from a parent,
the kid’s imagination can be directed in productive ways
and focused on creating a truly different costume idea.
In this way the run-of-the-mill ideas that the kid
started out with can blossom and grow into something
completely different.
To help your kid work on a unique kid Halloween costume,
get together with him or her and have a brainstorm
session. Just grab a pen and paper and start tossing out
ideas with your kid. Make sure that the kid’s ideas are
taken seriously and that you are there to offer
assistance and guidance. This is your kid’s project
after all and you are there only to help. Some parents
make the mistake of completely taking over the project
and thereby discounting the kid’s input, even if it is
done unintentionally.
By taking the kid’s ideas and helping to expound on them
and encouraging the kid to develop them further you are
reinforcing the concept that this truly is the kid’s
project and that the kid’s ideas and thoughts have
merit. A project like this can go a long way toward
bonding with your kid and helping your kid mature into a
young adult.
Most of all, remember that this project should be fun,
first and foremost. It is okay to make sure that your
kid sees the idea through to completion and the lesson
that “something worth doing is worth doing right” can be
taught, but the costume design project should never be
made to feel like “work” or a chore rather than
something that the kid is doing to have fun. By keeping
these guidelines in mind and combining your adult
sensibilities with your kid’s wild imagination, you can
help create a truly unique kid Halloween costume.
